History

Based in Boston, Massachusetts, the Liberty Mutual Group (LMG) is the fifth largest insurer in the United States for property and casualty insurance. The company was founded in 1912 as the Massachusetts Employees’ Insurance Association and the first branch began operation in 1914. It was also in 1914 that they first started selling auto insurance policies. In 1919, the company ran their very first ad campaign. In the 1930s, Liberty Mutual completed their expansion of operations to serve every state in the US.

Liberty Mutual has since expanded their operations into many countries around the world including Brazil, China and India. They were recently ranked 71st on the Fortune 500 list.

In 2004, Liberty Mutual sold their personal lines business to Meloche Monnex (a member of the TD Bank Financial Group).
