Kumho Crugen HT51 Review

The Crugen HT51 is a model of tire from the Kumho company that was released in the spring of 2016. This all-season tire has performed well in various reviews, as it is very durable and offers a comfortable ride. A little over a year after it was released, it was branded with the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol, indicating they are severe snow service rated.  Before the tires were branded with this iconic symbol, the tires still met the strict standards for the severe snow service rating.

This tire was designed for driving on a variety of roads. Gravel roads and country roads are easy to handle, providing good tire and wheel control. Muddy roads are not a challenge, and many highway miles can be driven with this tire. However, you need to use caution in heavy muds, as the tire was not constructed for that.

Kumho Crugen HT51 tires fit on a wide variety of vans, light pickups, and SUVs. Models that the HT51 fit on include the following:

  • Nissan Titan, Xterra, Frontier, Pathfinder
  • Toyota Tacoma, Tundra, FJ Cruiser, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, Highlander
  • Dodge Ram, Dakota, Durango
  • Ford Expedition, Ranger, Bronco, F-150, Explorer
  • Mercury Mountaineer

  • Chevrolet Silverado, Avalanche, S10, Suburban, K2500, Colorado, Blazer
  • Isuzu Trooper
  • Jeep Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Liberty
  • Mazda B4000

The tread compound on these Crugen HT51 tires is molded in an asymmetric tread design. For maximum treadwear, there is an optimized geometric block layout.

Kumho Crugen HT51 Performance Review

Treadwear and Durability

The Kumho Crugen HT51 has zig-zag patterns on the sidewalls to reduce noise levels. The tread wear has a general review rating of excellence when it comes to the performance of this tire. Based upon consumer reviews, you can get between 50, 000 to 100, 000 miles if tread life from each tire.

Dry Performance

The dry traction of the Crugen HT51 is amazing. It has received excellent marks for cornering stability, steering response the traction.

Wet Performance

Wet traction also receives excellent marks. The hydroplaning resistance proved to offer complete control when the highway was wet. This is because of the four wide, circumferential zigzag grooves.

Snow Traction and Braking Performance

Light snow traction is excellent on this Kumho tire. While deep snow traction and ice traction did not score as high, their performance was still unbelievable.

Due to the 3D sipe application, you can feel comfortable on snow-packed highways. Not only is the grip maximized, but you can break through the ice as well.

Comfort & Noise

On the sidewall of the Kumho Crugen HT51, there are several tread block pitches. These allow the noise to be diminished as the tires spin. There are also three central rib tread blocks that offer a balanced ride. This, in turn, helps cut down on the noise.

The Kumho Crugen HT51 tire has five circumferential rigid tread blocks, which assist in straight-line driving, cornering, braking, balance, and accelerating capabilities. It can attribute the firm silica-rubber compound for receiving a comfortable ride performance.

Tire Warranty

The Warranty on the Kumho Crugen HP51 is for 6 Years /70, 000 P-metric sizes and 45, 000 miles on LT models.  It does have a Uniformity Warranty for the first 2/32″ of wear. The Workmanship and Materials Warranty is good for 6 Years with a free replacement of the first 2/32″ of wear, then prorated to the final 2/32″ remaining depth. Under this section of the guarantee, it notes that conditions that require a tire to be removed from service that is within the tire manufacturers’ control of raw materials or quality of workmanship will be covered.

There is not a Manufacturer’s Road Hazard Warranty. Under many states’ laws, tires become legally worn out when they reach 2/32″ of remaining tread depth (identified when the tread blocks/ribs wear down to the bars molded across their tread pattern). Tire manufacturer tread life/mileage warranties specify pro-rated replacement will only be considered when all four tires reach that point.

Treadlife/mileage warranties generally don’t apply to tires fitted as Original Equipment on new vehicles (unless specifically included by the tire manufacturer). Replacement tires covered by a treadlife/mileage guarantee have the warranty cost factored into their price.

Treadlife/mileage warranties only apply to the original owner and vehicle upon which the set of tires was initially installed. If you have any questions, you should contact customer service. They will be able to provide you with the information you need about your vehicle’s warranty.
